Scribner has announced the highly anticipated memoir Mother Mary Comes to Me by Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy, set for release in September 2025. This intimate memoir reflects on Roy’s life and the profound, complex relationship with her mother, whom she describes as “my shelter and my storm.”

Written after the passing of her mother in 2022, Roy said she began writing to process her emotions, explaining, “I ran from [her] at age eighteen, not because I didn’t love her, but in order to be able to continue to love her.”

Roy shared that she’s "been writing this book all [her] life" and acknowledges that "perhaps a mother like mine deserved a writer like me as a daughter." The memoir offers not only a deeply personal narrative but also explores themes of love, freedom, and grace.

Scribner’s Kathy Belden praised the memoir for Roy’s "capaciousness," noting that her "mind, her compassion, her love of home" will inspire readers to expand their perspectives. The memoir will be published simultaneously in several countries, including the U.S., Canada, India, and the UK. The memoir’s audio edition, to be read by Roy, will be published by Simon & Schuster.

Roy, known for The God of Small Things and The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, continues to build on her legacy with this moving exploration of her own life and relationships.
